Lorrie Huegel’s IRONMAN Chattanooga Fundraiser
Welcome to my fundraiser for the Angel’s Watch Military & Police Dog fund!
Your support of me, my goal of completing the IRONMAN Chattanooga and your generous donations to this special organization are beyond appreciated!
I am racing Chattanooga 70.3 on May 19, 2024 to raise money and awareness for Angel's Watch Military & Police Dog fund. Racing for a cause helps keep me motivated and accountable. I've done several half marathons and marathons including Chicago and Boston. Crossing the finish line in those races is pretty amazing. Crossing the finish line in Augusta in 2023, with 3 of my best friends after a full knee replacement, while raising money to help pets, was an amazing experience like nothing else!
Will you help me support my K-9 friends with a final salute?
My husband, David, and I have a special place in our hearts for Angel’s Paws, which provides complete end-of-life care for pets and their families. They provided compassionate services for two of our mastiffs, Ripley and Worf.
Their associated non-profit, Angel’s Watch, has a fund dedicated specifically to help our working or retired military, police and public service K9’s in the greater Cincinnati area with end-of-life care. This non-profit provides pet hospice, home euthanasia, private cremation, and memorial services with dignity and respect as a final salute. Learn more about my friend, K-9 Kurt Altman, who inspired this fund below.
A bit about me: I was born and raised in Southeastern Massachusetts. I graduated from UMASS/Amherst in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. I am the owner of Stitch EFX Embroidery. My husband, David, and I have been married for 28 years and are dog parents. Chattanooga will be my third IRONMAN.

Serving K-9s Who’ve Served Us: In memory of K-9 Kurt Altman
I am raising money in memory of my friend, K-9 Kurt, who inspired the Angel’s Watch Military & Police Dog fund.
K-9 Kurt and his handler, Joel, were paired together at the eight-week ATF Explosives Detection Course in Front Royal, Virginia in the fall of 2006. Kurt certified on ATF operational searches and National Odor Recognition Test. Kurt and Joel had an amazing partnership during their 7 years of work in the Washington, DC area, conducting building searches, deliveries, vehicles, unattended packages and assisting in search warrants. One of the highlights of Kurt’s first few years working was being at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration on Pennsylvania Ave.
Kurt excelled at his work and interacting with people and was soon known as a representative of his agency throughout the DC area. His handler took great pride in representing his agency and the police K-9 community and wrote a children’s book in 2010 about a fictional police K-9 called “Hoover the FBI Dog”. Kurt continued to serve and worked the 2013 Presidential Inauguration until he retired later in the summer of 2013 and moved with his family to Cincinnati. At home he enjoyed simply being a regular dog. Kurt’s favorite activity would be when he would get to come on vacation to his family’s lake home in Kentucky and spend the entire time swimming and riding in the boat.
Towards the end of his life, Angel’s Paws assisted in preparing for sending Kurt over the Rainbow Bridge. Project K-9 Hero and Angel’s Paws made sure Kurt was comfortable and was taken care of when the time came for him to gain his wings in January of 2018.
Joel stated, “Kurt was the best partner, family member and friend anyone could have asked for. I never imagined that he would get to go to work with my dog every day, but for the 7 years we worked together, he couldn’t have asked for a better experience in life.”
