Layah

“My girl has truly done it all. Not many dogs can tell the stories she can. I am so grateful that she could be home when she passed surrounded by her cats that love her so much and her grandma and grandpa.” - Mandy, 2022 Recipient

Mandy fell in love with Layah at first sight, one Sunday in 2008, when she saw her in an adoptable puppy window. Even though Layah was just a puppy, she had been scheduled for euthanasia. Due to a ban on pitbulls in Cincinnati at the time, the facility manager would not allow Mandy to adopt her, even though Mandy lived in a smaller village that was outside of Cincinnati proper. Mandy refused to leave the facility without her and was able to reach an agreement with the facility manager to petition 250 signatures from her town agreeing for her to adopt the puppy. She was able to leave with Layah that day, as her foster dog, until she met her petition goal, which she did.

Layah had suffered and injury early in her life and Mandy became her caregiver. Mandy never expected Layah to turn ten years old, but marveled that she turned fourteen!

Layah was spoiled with birthday parties and enjoyed lamb chops. She helped Mandy foster bottle fed kittens, and raccoons over the years. And, of course, Layah has been Mandy’s emotional support through tough times.

Layah’s quality of life had been declining due to high kidney values. Due to financial hardship of Layah’s medications, taking care of two children that are not her own, and caring for 14 cats, Mandy was unsure of how she could give Layah a comforting goodbye. Angel’s Watch was able to provide loving end of life care for Layah, with her kitties and human family members by her side.
